A Paradigm Shift in Providing Stroke Care
Four recently released randomized interventional studies, three of which were presented at the International Stroke Conference, provide level 1 evidence that mechanical thrombectomy is superior to medical therapy alone for stroke due to large vessel occlusions. As a high-volume Comprehensive Stroke Center (CSC), Lehigh Valley Hospital (LVH) has the same structural efficiency and algorithmic care that patients benefited from in these studies. This edition of BrainMatters takes a closer look at how CSCs are changing the standard of care for certain stroke patients.
The Verdict Is In: Endovascular Intervention Is the Standard of Care for Large Vessel Occlusion
Findings from four studies conclusively document the benefits of endovascular intervention in eligible stroke patients with a large vessel occlusion. These results mandate the need for a major paradigm shift from the current protocols favoring medical therapy. Read More

Case Example: Aspiration of an Embolism in an Extracranial Carotid Artery
When paramedics called in a Stroke Alert to Lehigh Valley Hospital (LVH), and rushed the patient to the emergency department (ED), the structural efficiencies of the high-volume Comprehensive Stroke Center were in place to handle the patient's unusual presentation. Read More

A Case for Field-Based Triage of Stroke
Current guidelines for EMS providers are to take patients to the nearest stroke center, without distinguishing between Primary Stroke Centers and Comprehensive Stroke Centers where advanced therapies are available. However, recent findings from four published studies could make a case for mandating transport of certain patients to comprehensive stroke centers. Read More
